Relieve Osteoarthritis Pain
Osteoarthritis
(OA)
is a chronic disease. It is also
known as hypertrophic osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease (DJD).
Osteoarthritis is often called 'wear and tear' of the joints and
happens with the deterioration of the joint cartilage which are the softer parts
of bones that cushion connections between each other. The cartilage of the
affected joint is roughened and becomes worn down. The bone now rubs on bone.
New bone known as bone spurs
or
osteophytes are formed at the
margins of the joints when this happens. As the disease progresses, the
cartilage becomes completely worn down and bony spurs develop around the joint.
The causes of osteoarthritis are unknown but it is associated with the aging
process and is the most common form of arthritis.
Sometimes joint damage caused by another type of arthritis, such as rheumatoid
arthritis, can also eventually lead to OA.
Symptoms of osteoarthritis usually appear in middle age, usually before the age
of 55 in both sexes. Between the ages of 30 to 40, it may appear without any
symptoms. After the age of 55, the incidence in women is higher. By the age of
70 and beyond, it is almost present in everyone.
Some of the symptoms of osteoarthritis include:
- morning stiffness
- limited movement
- joint swelling
- joint pain in rainy weather
- gradual and subtle onset of deep aching joint pain
Steroids may be injected directly into the joint to reduce inflammation and
pain. Many people are also using remedies like chondroitin sulfate and
glucosamine. These supplements are helpful in pain relief but do not appear to
grow new cartilage.
Doctor may also inject artificial joint fluid (Hyalgan, Synvisc) into the knee
for temporary relief of pain for up to six months.
Exercises are important to maintain joint and overall mobility. Home exercise
treatment is often used by physical therapists or occupational therapists for
this purpose.
Disability with osteoarthritis is less
common than with rheumatoid arthritis. However, movement may become very
limited. For those with difficulty in performing activities of daily
living such as walking, cooking, personal hygiene or doing house chores, you may
want to invest in a Ultrasonic
Far-infrared Home Spa Unit.
Immersing in
Ultrasound Far-infrared bath produce
an internal warming effect in your body. The ultrasonic bubbles produce
10,000-15,000 micro-tremors per second, delivering 1.5 kg/cm2 of pressure on the
body. This has an effect similar to exercise and thus it can provide an
effective passive exercise effect. 15 minutes of use of the Ultrasonic Spa Bath
is equivalent to jogging 3 to 5 km.
Good nutrition and careful weight control are also important. Weight loss for
overweight individuals will decrease the mechanical strain placed on the joints
of the lower extremities.

spa bath machine as a busy man's exercise machine and
achieve all the benefits of
exercising.
